Welcome to the The Dusty Shelf, Tim Marston's presence on the web. Focused primarily on Roman Britain, this site is aimed at those interested in the role of the Roman Empire in British history, however the material within should also be of relevance to those studying a more general history of archaeology and archaeological thought. The intention over time is for this site to be something of a library for older tomes that have passed into the public domain. There are a number of well-publicised initiatives already underway to scan some of the vast bibliography of human work, primarily by Google and Microsoft. This site is intended to be a little more focused, and to introduce the researcher to volumes that might otherwise be overlooked.

I want to keep things as relevant as possible, so any comments or criticisms will be read with interest. My e-mail address is displayed in the left-hand menu and also on the About the Author page

Site Update (1st April 2006)
More chapter breakdowns added. I still haven't received any suggestions from people as to what they might prefer to see scanned first, hint hint!

Site Update (22nd March 2006)
I've rectified the problem with downloading Gibbon chapters 7-10. Also, Charlesworth chapter 12 is now available for download.

Site Update (27th January 2006)
Several of the books now have chapter breakdowns on their own pages, but the scans still need doing.

Site Update (20th January 2006)
There! Now the list of potential books is a little more substantial, it gives a little more choice. I'll try to get author pages and chapter summaries for them all over the next couple of weeks.

Site Update (18th January 2006)
I should be finding the time to upload some more extracts in the next couple of days. From what I can see on my traffic monitor the Gibbon chapters that I've put up are being downloaded by people, which is great news. For some reason I didn't expect that anyone else would be interested, but I guess that just goes to show otherwise. Nobody has e-mailed me with any pointers as to what I should do next, though. I'll expand the list of potentials shortly to give you more options, but a bit of feedback would really be appreciated!

Site Update (4th January 2006)
Graphic backgrounds have now been put together and uploaded, so the formatting is essentially complete, for now...

Site Update (23rd December 2005)
Finally put together a CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) template for the website, which will be subject to amendment, but at least now I can scan and upload more easily!
Having done this, and realising the sheer mass of the various books that I intend to upload, I'd appreciate some input. In the right-hand column I have made a shortlist of books that I intend to do, but doing all of them will take time. Hence, I would appreciate some e-mail input on the matter. If you'd like to see more books from the 1789 edition of Gibbon online, let me know. Likewise, if there would be more immediate value in one of the other works, tell me!

Site Update (15th July 2005)
The first Gibbon volume is now online (Chapters I-X)!
