Background

Having long-held a fascination with archaeology, I first trained on an excavation at Bignor Roman villa when I was 16. The following season I volunteered at the Stanway Romano-British cemetary just outside Colchester. I took the following summer (1997) away from the discipline to go on an expedition to the Karakoram and Kashmir in Pakistan

In the autumn of 1997 I started volunteering full-time at the British Museum in the department of Prehistoric & Romano-British antiquities, culminating in work on the Lower Palaeolithic site at Elveden in Suffolk over the summer of 1998.

Later the same year I began my undergraduate studies in Archaeology & Anthropology at St. John's College, Oxford. While there I had the opportunity to work on an excavation in Swaziland, and was also the first undergraduate to be asked to assist in supervising the annual training excavation. Since graduating in 2001, my practical work has unfortunately had to take a back seat to my career (I wish there was more money in archaeology), so I have made the transition to armchair enthusiast.

Happily, my work has allowed me to build on my other interest, technology. Despite some fantastic applications of GIS systems in archaeology, bringing content to the internet itself has been fairly slow. Hopefully, by making my own little contribution I can help to amend this.
